The French+ Initiative at MIT gathers scholars, working across the humanities and social sciences, whose research and teaching center on the French and francophone cultures and societies.
It aims to support research excellence, French language pedagogy, and to foster dialogue between faculty, instructors, and students of all levels.
The French+ Initiative hosts the MIT Global France Seminar and various cultural events. Its many connections, which include teaching exchanges, an Arts Sponsorship, a Visiting Professorship, and a cultural immersion trip for MIT students in France and in Belgium, promotes local and international collaborations.
The curriculum is designed to offer rich opportunities to all students, from the elementary level to the most advanced courses. The expertise of the French group includes language, literature, intercultural studies, critical theory, French politics and society, gender and queer studies, modern French history, film studies, visual culture, francophone African studies, Haitian history, and cultural anthropology. The French Program offers classes to about 300 students every year, including majors, minors and concentrators.
