Randall Colaizzi received his B.A. in English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his M.A. (Latin) and Ph.D. (Classical Languages) at the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he excavated with the UC dig at Nemea, Greece, and also received the Eisner Prize for Poetry. His research and publications focus on Roman poetry of the Augustan Age. At MIT, he teaches the Latin I and II Intensive Latin courses. At the University of Massachusetts, Boston, he teaches graduate seminars in Latin, and courses in Classical Civilization and Roman Archaeology. His two-semester Fundamentals of Latin courses have been offered for more than a decade and are the longest-running online Latin courses in the world. His summer graduate Latin course on Caesar trains high school Latin instructors who teach the A.P. curriculum. He also teaches Sport & Spectacle in the Ancient World, Greek & Roman Religion, Roman Archaeology, and a course on Pompeii that also is offered as a study abroad course every January based in Cuma, Italy. In 2015, he was awarded the UMass Boston Award for Innovations in Online Teaching. For more than twenty years he has led study tours of Greece, Sicily, Rome and the Bay of Naples.
